Weekend links: New pressure on media, and why tech can't be blamed for everything
It's probably a sign of the times that three, maybe four, of this week's links are about the media industry and the new challenges that generative AI will mean to media businesses. I have a lot of thoughts around this, but for now I'll just share the links as they are:
- Anil Dash: âWherever you get your podcastsâ is a radical statement
- Ben Werdmuller: Stripping the web of its humanity
- Engadget: Who makes money when AI reads the internet for us?
Cory Doctorow's piece in Financial Times is somewhat about the same topic: âEnshittificationâ is coming for absolutely everything.
Also worth reading is a text on AI and law and one about open source models.
But the most important thing I read over the last week is this, by danah boyd:
The problem is not: âTechnology causes harm.â The problem is: âWe live in an unhealthy society where our most vulnerable populations are su1ering because we donât invest in resilience or build social safety nets.â
